Focus on Immune Health

We are living in a time where immune threats are the topic of every day discussion.  There is so much that can be done to support your overall immune health.  In the Immune Health Program we focus on what you can do to optimize your immune function.  Below we review some dietary guidelines to help you eat for healthy immunity,  highlight supplements that can provide support to the immune system and give simple de-stressing activities to help buffer the effects that stress can have on the immune system.  By focusing on the health habits that you can control, you can empower yourself to stay healthy and feel your best.

 

 

 

 

A diet to support immune function is low in sugar and high in healthy fats and proteins as well as various nutrients targeted at nourishing and supporting the body.  Here are some basics to help get you started! 

Eating Guidelines:
Foods to focus on:
  • ​​Fruits high in Vitamin C such as kiwi, orange, lemon and papaya

  • Non-starchy vegetables such as asparagus, celery, bell peppers, eggplant, zucchini, leafy greens, carrots, green onions and chicory

  • Root vegetables high in beta carotene such as sweet potato, winter squash, beets, turnips and radishes

  • Healthy fats such as cold pressed virgin oils such as coconut, & avocado.

  • Vinegars such as apple cider, white wine, red wine and balsamic

  • Grains that are gluten free such as quinoa, brown rice, buckwheat, teff, & millett

  • Meat such as organic or free range poultry and wild game and limited organic, free range red meat and pork

  • Seafood and fish such as wild caught and low mercury fish such as salmon, herring, sardines, shrimp, black cod (sablefish) trout

  • Eggs which are organic

  • Legumes such as lentils, chickpeas, beans and peas

  • Sweeteners such as honey and maple syrup that are used sparingly

  • Bone and Miso broths

  • Seaweed products

Foods to avoid:
  • Alcohol

  • Processed and packaged foods

  • Starchy vegetables such as potatoes, corn, peas

  • Gluten grains such as wheat, barley, rye, spelt, bran, oats, couscous, kamut and white bread/flour

  • Soda and sweetened beverages

  • Sweetners such as processed sugars and artificial sweetners, corn syrup, Agave, Stevia, Equal, Splenda, Sweet 'n Low

  • Processed fruit juices

  • Factory farmed and processed meats

  • Candy and sweets

  • Condiments such as jellies and fruit spreads

  • Processed broths including chicken and vegetable broths
