How did you get your start in Functional Medicine?
I began my career as a board-certified, conventional OB/GYN, trained at Emory University. After years of practicing, and because of severe environmental allergies, I had to stop delivering babies and performing surgeries. I developed allergies to all surgical gloves, soaps, fragrance and many other chemicals and food additives.
In my search for a way to help myself and my patients I found Functional medicine. My mother had Alzheimer’s at the time and I discovered Dr. Dale Bredeson’s first paper on the reversal of mild cognitive impairment in the fall of 2014. It was too late to help my mother but I began to use his principles in my own practice and found a local Functional medicine group and through that group learned about training with the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM).
While becoming a certified IFM Practitioner (IFMCP), I learned more about treating women's issues in a holistic way but also broadened my scope of knowledge about chronic illness in women and men.
What is your philosophy of health and healing?
We are mind and body and spirit. All of these areas of our being impact our health and 'well being'. My approach is to help each person examine the health of their mind, body and spirit and to help them discover the path to their best wellness.
In Functional medicine we want to find the root cause of disease and help the whole person to heal by addressing those root causes. Each person is unique and has a unique path to healing. My goal is to join my patients on their personal journey to heal on every level. I am just the guide, they do the healing.
Who is your ideal patient?
I am passionate about using the most natural means possible to help women with their gynecological problems like PMS, PCOS, abnormal Pap smears (ASCUS, dysplasia), persistent vaginal discharge, menstrual problems, painful sex, symptoms of peri-menopause and menopause, interstitial cystitis, fibroids, infertility and more. I also enjoy helping men balance their hormones.
Because of my family history of Alzheimer's disease, I am also dedicated to using cutting edge research to help those struggling with memory loss and early cognitive impairment.
I also frequently see Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and hypothyroidism, chronic fatigue, Lyme and associated diseases, fibromyalgia, mold exposure, adrenal gland dysfunction, chronic stress, insomnia, elevated cholesterol and chemical sensitivities and allergies.
