Back to School Health
Updated: Aug 23

It’s that time again: back to school... aah! When considering returning to school, there are many aspects to consider. However, there are certain things you can do now to make a more straightforward transition from summer to school. There are three areas that we will focus on in this blog.
Back to school nerves
Immune health
Focus
Back to school nerves
When it's time to return to school, many emotions can be triggered, including excitement, nervousness, anticipation, and maybe even dread. However, that doesn't always have to be the case. Essential oils are an effective way to ease nervousness and anxiety. One such essential oil, steady grounding blend, is made specifically for that purpose. It is a combination of essential oils used to help balance your mood and emotions.
Aromatherapy is an alternative medicine therapy that can be beneficial in the inpatient and outpatient setting for symptoms of pain, nausea, general well-being, anxiety, depression, stress, and insomnia (Farrar & Farrar, 2020). Using premade essential oil is a great way to bring relief with you throughout the day. It can be easily placed in a backpack or office bag and taken with you wherever you go.
Using essential oils as aroma therapy has been seen as beneficial for students in decreasing stress and anxiety. Aromatherapy benefits all; however, inhalation aroma therapy can be effective for high school students (Seo, 2009). Using the oils on the back of the neck and simply inhaling the aroma has shown benefits to the user. The two grounding blends that are wonderful for reducing anxiety are DoTerra’s children’s blend, Steady and Adaptive.
Immune Health
Environmental pests can be a big concern when transitioning from summer back to school. There are simple steps one can take to protect from these pests:
When you think (or know) you're sick, stay home.
Wash your hands with soap and water when using the restroom and frequently throughout the day.
If you have a cough or sneeze, use your sleeve.
Use hand sanitizer when needed.
DoTerra OnGuard hand sanitizer spray has the following essential oils: Wild orange, Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary essential oils, and natural antiseptic ethyl alcohol (DoTerra, 2023)—a great hand sanitizer for on-the-go.
Focus
Focus can be a concern regarding back-to-school health due to a new school, new friends, new teachers, new classrooms, new routines, and new everything. There is a tremendous amount of change associated with going back to school. Using a blend of essential oils can also help promote better focus. DoTerra offers the Thinker focus blend to assist with this area of back-to-school health, and it is great for use throughout the day to help you stay focused. The Thinker blend, part of the children's collection, includes Vetiver, Peppermint, Clementine, Rosemary, and Fractionated coconut oil (DoTerra, 2023). This is great for all skin types but wonderful for sensitive skin, as it is formulated in a carrier oil.
